City of Oakley Seeks Local Artists

Driving through downtown streets over the last few years has transitioned from the “hum-drum” commute through town, to an art walk that highlights the works of local artists.  Transforming basic utility boxes from an eye-sore into an artful experience. Not only is it a fun way to beautify our city streets, it is an exciting opportunity for budding artists to show off their skills.

Calling All Oakley Artists

Due to the success of such programs, the City of Oakley invites artists to participate in the third installment of the Utility Box Mural Project, in conjunction with the Oakley’s 20th Anniversary.

The City of Oakley is seeking artists to showcase their artwork on utility boxes located throughout Oakley. The goal of this project is to beautify Oakley, deter unsightly graffiti on utility boxes, and bring art into unexpected places. Utility boxes should reflect the surrounding environment and showcase Oakley’s rich history and our unique appeal as A Place for Families in the Heart of the Delta.

How to Apply

To be considered as an artist for the Oakley Utility Box Mural Project, you do need to follow an application process.  And as much as the City would love to showcase all local artists, the application process ensures the art and the artists selected are local painters or muralists who have a vision that aligns with the theme of the year. To apply, follow the below process:

Applications must be submitted to:

City of Oakley Recreation Division

3231 Main Street, Oakley CA 94561 by 6:00 p.m., February 28, 2019.

***Late applications will not be accepted. To download a copy of the Call for Artists please click below.

Remember, there is not one “right” or “wrong” vision for the Utility Box Mural Project.  The expertise and artistic specialty each artist choose to display are welcomed to apply.  Previous art installations have included a full array of styles, pictures, and techniques.  Artists who have a vision that aligns with the theme of A Place for Families in the Delta should apply.

We think that our local backroads are already beautiful places to explore. However, one way to ensure that even the most repetitive drive through town truly is an adventure is to highlight our community with art.  To learn more about our local backroads, be sure to visit our page frequently.
