Oktoberfest Returns to Downtown Brentwood

Every year, old-world Germany visits small towns, and big cities, alike in a near-global celebration of Oktoberfest.   Although each city may present their version of Oktoberfest slightly differently, Oktoberfest in downtown Brentwood, CA, hosted by the Downtown Brentwood Coalition, is an explosion of the tastes, sounds, and energy you do not want to miss.

What is Oktoberfest?

Oktoberfest has its roots in 1810 Munich, Germany – designed as a  5-day celebration of the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on October 12, 1810.  The celebration was such a welcoming community celebration, that it was repeated, even more extravagantly the next year.  From carousels and swings for children to themed beer tents, live music, horse races, dancing, and traditional dress.  Today, Oktoberfest is seen as the world’s largest fair.

Oktober Fest Celebration

In modern-day, Oktoberfest is a 2-week celebration. Interestingly, it is also seen as a primarily agricultural celebration.  Stories share that Octoberfest is a day to celebrate the bounty of the land and a day to reflect on the hard work of harvest that is done throughout the summer. The celebration recognizes the early marriage that kicked off the event but also gives recognition to the importance of harvest for beer makers throughout Germany.  And on top of beer meeting stringent German requirements, spectators will find stein-hoisting, pretzels, lederhosen, polka music, singing, dancing, and traditional German fare.
